Two Different Situations

Non-regulated professions (most IT, business, and many engineering roles in practice): recognition is generally a supporting factor for your visa application rather than a legal requirement to work — checking your degree against the anabin database is usually sufficient.
Regulated professions: recognition is mandatory by law, regardless of your nationality, before you can practice. This includes most healthcare professions, teaching, and some engineering and legal roles. You cannot legally work in these roles in Germany without a formal recognition certificate (Anerkennungsbescheid).

Step-By-Step: Checking And Applying

Check the anabin database (maintained by the Central Office for Foreign Education, ZAB) to see how your specific Indian university and degree are already categorized — many Indian degrees (IITs, NITs, central universities, many private universities) are already listed.
If your profession is regulated, use the Anerkennungs-Finder on the official Anerkennung in Deutschland portal to identify exactly which body is responsible for your specific profession (this varies by profession and sometimes by state).
Gather your degree certificates, transcripts, and any professional licenses, with certified translations if requested.
Submit your application to the responsible body identified above — this could be the ZAB, a Chamber (Kammer), a state ministry, or a professional licensing body, depending on your field.
The responsible body compares your qualification’s content and duration against the closest German equivalent, and may ask for additional documents, exams, or a period of supervised practice (Anpassungslehrgang) to close specific gaps.
Once approved, you receive an Anerkennungsbescheid (recognition certificate) confirming equivalence.
