Anmeldung

Anmeldung is the official registration of your residential address in Germany. It is usually one of the first bureaucracy steps after moving into a new apartment or room.

After moving, you normally register your address with the local city office. Once completed, you receive a registration certificate, often called a Meldebescheinigung.

You usually need Anmeldung when you:

  • Move to Germany for the first time
  • Move to a new city
  • Change your address within the same city
  • Need documents for banking, work, residence permit, or other official processes
  • Passport
  • Visa or residence permit, if applicable
  • Completed registration form
  • Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your landlord or housing provider
  • Marriage or birth certificates if registering family members, where required
  1. Find the Anmeldung page on your city website.
  2. Book an appointment if your city requires one.
  3. Ask your landlord for the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.
  4. Fill the registration form carefully.
  5. Attend the appointment with original documents.
  6. Keep the Meldebescheinigung safely after registration.
  • Confusing a rental contract with the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
  • Waiting too long to book an appointment
  • Not adding all family members on the form
  • Using outdated forms from non-official websites

Your tax ID is usually sent by post after successful registration. Keep your mailbox name updated so official letters can reach you.
